GeezIME and Older Android Devices

Android has become a great mobile operating system, but it wasn't very inclusive in the beginning. As a 21st century major product from a Google, it is naturally expected to support all languages of the world from its inception. Well it does support plenty of languages now but NOT in its earlier days. Unfortunately Geez script has been one of the victims. Hence this post is used to explain matters.

Android versions earlier than 3.0 like the popular version, code named gingerbread, don't support major languages. To make matters worse there are millions of devices running the older versions.

After the release of GeezIME for Android, we have received some emails form users telling us that when they try to write Geez they see boxes instead of normal alphabets. That means the Android version on the device is one of the old ones, and does not have fonts that support Geez script.

As stated above the problem applies to huge number of languages for example many Indian languages, and its not only a case for Geez. Therefore the problem should not be attributed to any particular Application or to the way it was installed. Good thing millions of newer devices do support Geez already, and the future is bright for Geez products and users.

However at EriLingual Solutions we don't want to leave any Geez user behind. And we have been and will work hard to find a solution for the owners of older devices. In fact we have already come up with a solution that enabled Geez on some old devices. But currently the solutions requires physical access to the devices and a process technically called rooting of the device. We are hoping to refine the solution and make it generic and as simple as possible to apply.

With time we will post our solution here, so stay tuned. We are also open and if anyone of our users finds a reliable solution email us and with full credit we will forward it to all users. Thank you.

  1. hello! I like what you do guys. if you can please try to make a language pack for some of the system localisation apps in play store it would be great. Amharic is already there I dont know if it translates the whole system.(I am talking about ICS and above. I havent tried KIT KAT yet. I am in 4.2. but for keyboard there is no proplem because people can just download multiling keybord from Play store. about ginger bread, I tried to install geez fonts as instructed from a certain Ethiopian website ( or it seemed) which was posted by a white man. for obvious reasons I had to root a chinise android phone running android 2.2 when I put the font file in the recomended folder the phone was soft bricked and finding the apropriate rom turned out to be impossible.( i didnt know about back ups then) I tried CW mode and it said it wasn avilable.. any way try to do it.
